Passion

I began this year singing a new anthem -- a song that spoke of letting things go. I sang it for everything from that which was important to me such as relationships and my business, all the way down to what was merely annoying – taxes, the driver that just cut me up and cancelled exercise classes. This worked until letting go seemed too passive a way to live life. While passivity can accomplish a lot in life (think Martin Luther King and Ghandi) for me, the song of letting go began to fall flat. Then I realized, while I knew the tune, I didn’t know its words. A passionate song needs both the melody and the words. And there is a big difference between the words letting go and compromise. I think it comes down to one thing – knowing your worth. Compromise, although a much-needed tool at times, can sometimes be the result of not standing up for oneself. With self-worth comes the knowledge that you deserve to have things go right, be right and that you have the power to make them so. If that means a complete overhaul of your life, then so be it. It certainly means not accepting the first answer that comes to your mind in order to solve a problem. There are no wrong answers. Only better ones. A lifetime of taking the risk to press harder for more than one right answer can only result in a deep, resonant song that tells of the best of you and your abilities. Whatever it is that you want to change, begin now. To quote Auntie Mame, “Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving.” If we love what we find instead of trying to find what we might love, I believe we'll never go hungry.
