Fuel is a collection of personal essays by me, Liese Gardner, which explore the things that drive us, from our professions to our alternative fuel such as art, yoga, food, music, poetry, design ... whatever ignites the passions within!

And In The Garage you'll find me tinkering with what drives me professionally -- new concepts in marketing and public relations for the way we think, work and connect.

ABOUT FUEL

FUEL. A material that is burned or altered in order to obtain energy and to heat or move an object. Fuel releases it's energry through a chemical reaction. An important property of a useful fuel is that its energy can be stored to be released only when needed, and that the release in controlled in such a way that the energy can be harnessed to produce work.

Fuel is energy that we harness, store, and release through our work, our love, our life, our art, our passions. Fuel is a blog that explores those passions, or alternative fuels, and how we keep them burning burn clean and true in us.

Whether we are creating marketing campaigns, producing events, having coffee with friends, writing a book or a blog or simply sitting still, we are always creating our own stories. We drive these creations. We set our course. We make the connection.

This is our work. This is our passion. This is our fuel.

And a little more information ...

FUEL is powered by Mecca Communications, a pr and marketing agency founded in 1999.

Before I started Mecca, I was the editor of Special Events magazine for 13 years. During that time, I became an intra-preneur. That is to say that in addition to writing and editing the magazine, I also looked for other projects I could create, other positions I could fill that would expand my knowledge of the events industry, of marketing and of business.

I took on the role of Education Director of The Special Event (seminars are just articles in 3-D, right?) and had a great time doing that. I wrote and directed a video of a high-profile Los Angeles event and catering firm that was then marketed through the magazine. And, together with my Managing Editor, Susan Cuadrado, wrote and produced a coffee table book, The Art of Special Events, with each chapter devoted to a different themed event designed and produced by leading event professionals.

When I became Associate Publisher, I took on the magazine's marketing promotions for advertisers and readers. As time went on, the promotions became bolder and more creative. One of them even won a Maggie Award given by the Western Publishing Association. I was very lucky that the owners of the company at that time and management there were so open to my ideas and allowed me and my team the space and the budget needed for creativity to thrive.

When it came time to move on to a new venture, the special events industry was supportive as always and gave me a solid foundation on which to build Mecca.  I've expanded my clientele to include photographers and artists, and event restaurants such as Campanile in Los Angeles, and interior design stores such as Duet.

I began Fuel as a creative outlet but also a place where I could bring together people with thoughts and ideas. I love the spirit of generosity fostered today through blogging and the community being built by the internet through social media and wanted to take part in it on a more personal level. Ever the intra-preneur (even in my own company) I'm looking forward to following this new road and finding out what direction Fuel will take all of us.
